Writer's Block: That's good eats
What was your favorite childhood meal? Do you still love it? Does it taste as good as you remember it?
My all time favorite childhood meal is macaroni and cheese. Not that Kraft stuff from the box, and not even my own delicious rendition of the classic. My Mom's macaroni and cheese--rotinis, turn a roux into cheese sauce, coat with shredded cheddar and bread crumbs and bake. I make the same recipe, but somehow it doesn't taste the same. It's still one of my favorite foods, along with pizza, of course, which is another childhood favorite. I also loved my mom's fried rice and chili, and later her chicken picatta (being opposed to the whole veal thing). I love food so much, but can't be a snooty foodie because I'm too easily pleased. Yes, give me pizza and a diet coke. Never mind that it might be pesto, goat's cheese and feta, tomatoes, red onions, roasted peppers and garlic. Macaroni and cheese? I'll take it.
Speaking of food, I need to get on my Christmas cookies. Anything with butter I like to laze up and do with the stand mixer. I know I won't get one until I get married or something. And I want yellow. This year, peanut blossoms, red and green M&M, ginger snaps, butter cookies, and something I've never done before. Suggestions, anyone?
